Case: Digitalising information for Volvo

The assignment
Volvo faced the challenge of digitalising its instruction manuals. There were lots of alternatives and they didn’t want to stick with just one technical solution.

“It’s important that we keep our options open,” says Andreas Jonasson, owner info group manager at Volvo.

The solution
Semcon has been responsible for developing instruction manuals for Volvo in the past. Semcon examined various opportunities for digitalising the information and presented it to Volvo. The decision was an iPhone mobile application.

“Apple had recently successfully launched the iPhone and apps were something everyone was talking about. We saw it as a smart step towards digitalising our information,” says Andreas Jonasson.

The result
Semcon took the information from the instruction manual and adapted it to digital format. It was complemented with things like video clips about the cars’ various functions. The application was launched on iTunes store in February 2011 and is there to download for free to the iPhone. “The app provides added value to car owners and shows that Volvo is at the vanguard of developments,” says Fredrik Larsson, group manager at Semcon Informatic.
